Whether the mask contains melt-blown non-woven fabric
The mask is composed of multiple layers of spunbond and melt-blown non-woven fabrics. The melt-blown fabric plays a key role in protection. Due to the high price of meltblown cloth and the recent tight supply, some of the inferior masks are not using meltblown cloth, so the main protective effect is missing. There are two methods to determine whether there is a meltblown cloth in the mask:
The meltblown fabric is located in the middle layer of the mask, which is obviously different from the spunbond fabric on the surface layer. The structure of the meltblown fabric is dense and the color must be white; while the structure of the spunbond fabric is relatively loose and the transparency is high. In addition, the strength of the two fabrics is also significantly different: the melt-blown fabric has a very low strength, which can be broken when pulled by hand; and the spunbond fabric has a high strength, which requires a lot of force to tear.
If you really do not want to cut the mask, you can also directly observe through the appearance of the mask. Because of the dense structure of meltblown cloth, qualified masks are almost opaque, and many fake masks without meltblown cloth have higher light transmittance (for specific comparison, please refer to the figure below). Significant difference, even under natural light, the qualified product is a little opaque when worn, while the facial skin is faintly visible when the fake product is worn.
Does the meltblown cloth carry static electricity
In order to make breathing as smooth as possible, and at the same time meet the protection requirements, qualified masks with melt-blown cloth will go through the electret process. The surface of the fiber after the electret has a large amount of charge, and intercepts fine particles through the electrostatic adsorption effect. We can also use the classic physical characteristic of electrostatic adsorption to verify whether the meltblown fabric is charged. As shown in the figure below, the non-woven fabric passing through the electret will have a significant attraction for hair and iron filings (Figure a). Although the amount of meltblown cloth in a single mask is small, the effect of absorbing hair may not be obvious, but the presence of electric charge can also make it adsorb on the wall (Figure b). Despite the melt-blown cloth in some of the shoddy masks, they did not pass through the electret, or because the electret technology was not closed, and the storage time was too long, resulting in a large amount of charge dissipation, and its protection performance naturally fell short of the standard.
